Awareness of global communities and different ethnic groups has been an issue, especially in America, as seen in many recent events. On a national scale, with a new light on the hate crimes against Asians and an overwhelming number of racist incidents, it has been coming increasingly obvious of the lack of racial awareness and understanding that we have. While, in bigger cities, there might be more opportunities for people to learn how to be globally aware and accepting of new ideas, in smaller towns like Green Bay, it is difficult to find this exposure. These habits of cultural acceptance and want to explore different ideas are integral to implement at any age. It is important that, especially in these small towns, to implement a global education starting during early schooling years while providing opportunities to learn about different cultures to the general public in order to promote racial awareness and encourage cultural acceptance.

Thus, this centers around the debate for global events and promoting this education to smaller communities to offer them the chance to both explore different cultural perspectives and to expand their limited knowledge to more diverse ideas and groups. Having a more global perspective, even in small towns, can help discourage racism and ignorance of different cultures, encouraging a more accepting and future-minded community. Additionally, especially in the workplace, international affairs and interactions are becoming the new normal, so it is important to educate and prepare people at a young age to encourage them to think on a more global level and be able to interact and be accepting of cultural differences.

However, while there are many positives for global education, there are still some opposing viewpoints on global-minded educational opportunities. Some people believe that, while global awareness is important, these things should not be taught in a classroom setting. It is not an integral part of one’s education and strays from the essentials of learning from subjects like math and science. While a global education might not be a part of the “core curriculum” I believe that this is essential to implement especially at a young age to promote the idea of racial acceptance and encourage students to always remain open and curious of other ideas. Also, as stated above, these skills are important habits to have to not only lead a better life and contribute to a more open society but also can translate well in a workplace environment.

Therefore, global education and awareness in a classroom and community setting should be provided especially in rural areas in order to help expose new ideas and cultures to these areas. As a result, we can create a more open, diverse environment while gearing people for the future in a work and global setting.
